Individual and Group Riding Programs

Riding Programs

Lessons at NMCTR are offered in session blocks of eight weeks. Each lesson is one hour in duration; students ride at the same time and on the same day each week of the session. Lessons include learning about horses, horsemanship, and riding skills. Students are instructed in haltering, leading, and saddling/bridling (“tacking up”). Riders learn to mount/dismount their horse with as much independence as possible. Instruction in English and Western riding styles is offered. Throughout the session, each rider is encouraged to increase their skill levels to the best of their capabilities.

NMCTR riders may also participate in horse shows during the year. In the spring, the Watermelon Mountain Pony Club hosts a demonstration show for riders with special needs at the New Mexico State Fair Grounds. In September, during Expo New Mexico, NMCTR riders take part in “Horses Helping People”; therapeutic riding programs from around the state are invited to this show at the fair grounds. Students compete in a variety of riding activities, such as walk/trot and barrels, and receive ribbons for their efforts.

NMCTR also offers a day summer camp for children and teens; each camp session is one week in duration. Campers learn about horses through participation in games, arts and crafts, and physical activities; each day of camp includes a riding lesson. The camp schedule is constructed with consideration for all riding levels, special needs, and ability levels of participating campers.
