April 26, 2022 –

In the Equine-Assisted Services industry, volunteers are very crucial to the success of each center. Each month, we will be choosing a volunteer of the month. For March 2022, the volunteer of the month is Shelly Richmond. Shelly volunteers as a horse leader, a sidewalker, and assists in daily horse care. During our Spring session, Shelly has picked up additional volunteer lesson shifts, will lead any and all the horses (even our silly Fjord), and interacts great with all our riders.

MEET SHELLY:

Shelly was born in Oklahoma and spent summers and holidays in Red River, NM. That’s where she discovered her love for horses. Shelly and her sister spent almost every day at the stables, riding, grooming and learning so much about them. Her and the love of her life, Robert, moved to Santa Fe from Grand Jct, CO in 2002. She worked at NDI-NM for 8 years and then the opportunity to work at the Lensic Performing Arts Center came up in 2010. She was the Office Manager/Bookkeeper there until she retired in February of this year. She started volunteering at NMCTR 2-weeks before the Covid shutdown and being able to go out and walk horses and do groundwork helped her get through that difficult time. “I got therapy for that year we didn’t have students riding.” She loves fishing, hiking and riding her Harley motorcycle. She is also a New Hope volunteer at the SF Animal Shelter.

Thank you, Shelly, for all your time and hard work at NMCTR!
